The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) have signed an interagency memorandum of understanding (MOU) to begin researching the effects of human exposure to airborne emissions from shale gas drilling sites.

The Obama administration last week proposed a $45 million interagency effort by the Interior Department, Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection (EPA) to research hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in fiscal year (FY) 2013. The request immediately raised the eyebrows of some Republicans, who questioned why the federal government needed more money to study fracking.

The Jonah Interagency Mitigation and Reclamation Office (JIO) said it selected seven out of a total of 19 project proposals received to mitigate the impact on wildlife habitat, water and air quality, and livestock forage of Jonah Field gas development in Wyoming. In this first round of projects, the JIO, which includes representatives from four state agencies and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), spent about $660,000 out of the $24.5 million donated by EnCana Corp. for the mitigation program.
