Top U.S. and Mexican energy regulatory officials late Thursday signed a letter of intent aimed at bolstering interagency coordination and cooperation on cross-border energy projects.

FERC Chairman Pat Wood and Dionisio Perez-Jacome Friscione, head of Mexico’s Comision Reguladora de Energia (CRE), signed the agreement at the Commission’s headquarter in Washington, DC.

“The United States and Mexico have a thriving cross-border trade in energy, and our interdependency will only increase in the years to come. This agreement will reinforce that relationship and allow us to better meet the needs of energy customers through improved coordination of our respective regulatory responsibility,” said Wood in a prepared statement.

The agreement paves the way for the sharing of energy information between FERC and the CRE, and calls for the two agencies to coordinate the timing of regulatory decisions to the extent possible.

In May, Wood signed a similar agreement with Ken Vollman, chairman of the National Energy Board in Canada.
