In a System Protection Warming declared Monday, MRT said that due to warm weather in its service area, effective with the start of Tuesday’s gas day it will not accept any long imbalance positions through the end of March.

Futures Weaken Following $6.80 Test, 107 Bcf Storage Withdrawal

With cold weather permeating the East, it was no surprise that the Energy Information Administration’s natural gas storage report for the week ended Jan. 25 revealed a 107 Bcf withdrawal, far greater than the prior week’s 88 Bcf pull. However, the withdrawal was on the low end of the range of industry estimates and slightly less than the 109 Bcf five-year average and the 115 Bcf pull for the same week last year.

Subject to weather conditions, Tennessee will require that physical flow be suspended at 20 Ship Shoal and two South Pelto meters for about five to seven days starting Friday in order to allow repair of a leak near Ship Shoal 157 on Line 523M-100, the 26-inch line between Ship Shoal 198 and Station 523 at Cocodrie, LA. Production impacted by this outage is estimated at 81,000 Dth/d.

Citing colder weather in northern Florida and low linepack, Florida Gas Transmission issued an Overage Alert Day notice for its market area Tuesday. The notice carried 25% tolerance for negative daily imbalances.

Futures Trickle Lower as Non-Commercial Selling Trumps Weather Forecast-Related Buying

Perhaps admitting to a little bit of overzealousness during Monday’s 16-cent rally, natural gas futures traders in overnight Access trading and then again on Tuesday pushed the February contract lower. With non-commercial traders continuing to hold a sizeable net-short position and some market watchers believing that the four-month-long downtrend is still intact, the question now becomes how much longer can the trend continue before it shows signs of cracking.

CenterPoint implemented an Operational Alert Wednesday, saying that based on the weather forecast for its service area and in order for it to maximize storage deliverability for Rate Schedules FT and NNTS customers, CenterPoint will not schedule interruptible receipts from the West 1 and West 2 Pooling Areas, and will only schedule secondary receipts from those pooling areas to the extent that they alleviate capacity constraints or are consistent with firm entitlements. A general lack of weather load outside some parts of the West and Upper Plains and the previous day’s screen drop resulted in mixed pricing Tuesday in which losses slightly outweighed gains. There was little rhyme or reason in the distribution of movement, as various points within specific market areas went both up and down.
