Titan to Return $281,000 to PA Consumers

The Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate (OCA) announced thatTitan Energy, which was purchased by AES Power Direct, LLC for $6million in cash at the end of July, will be returning an estimated$281,000 in uncashed deposit checks to approximately 6,300 of itsPennsylvania customers in the Columbia Gas and Peoples Natural Gasservice territories (see Daily GPI, July,26).

Enterprise Purchases Coral’s Acadian Gas Assets

Houston’s Enterprise Products Partners L.P. has purchasedAcadian Gas LLC’s extensive southern Louisiana assets, whichinclude 1,000-plus miles of pipeline, more than 1 Bcf/d of capacityand a leased natural gas storage facility with 3.4 Bcf of capacityfrom Coral Energy LLC for $226 million in cash. Coral Energy, alsobased in Houston, is an affiliate of Shell Oil Co.

TransCanada Pipelines Sells More Midstream

TransCanada Pipelines Ltd is on the move again. A week ago thecompany’s power subsidiary purchased Westcoast Energy’s interests infive Canadian cogeneration plants in a deal valued at C$512million. This week, its midstream subsidiary is selling its naturalgas gathering and processing assets in Saskatchewan to newcomer VISTAMidstream Solutions Ltd (see Daily GPI, Sept. 8).

TransCanada PipeLines Ltd., through its wholly-owned subsidiary,TransCanada OSP Holdings Ltd., reported last week it has purchasedan additional 29.9% interest in an Ocean State Power (OSP) plantfrom National Grid USA for an estimated $61 million, bringing itsfull ownership interest in the OSP facility to 100%. Thetransaction is expected to close by September, pending regulatoryapprovals. The 560 MW, combined-cycle plant, which is located inBurrville, RI, is considered one of the largest gas-firedfacilities in the Northeast region. It is fueled by 100 MMcf/d ofgas from western Canada.In addition to full ownership in the OSPplant, TransCanada announced last week that it plans to build twonew gas-fired co-generation plants in Alberta.TransCanada PowerL.P. owns a total of six power plants in Ontario, British Columbiaand New York State, with a seventh plant nearing completion.

Calpine Corp.’s 500 MW Hidalgo Energy Center began commercialoperation June 14, the company said yesterday. In March, thecompany purchased a 78.5% stake in the plant, which is located inEdinburg, TX. The Brownsville Public Utilities Board holds theremaining 21.5%. Calpine operates the energy center and providesfuel management services. The center is located within one mile ofCalpine’s Magic Valley Generating Station, a 730 MW gas-firedfacility currently under construction. The Magic Valley facility isexpected to be on line in the summer of 2001. The Hidalgo plantwill sell power into the Texas wholesale market and potentiallyinto the growing energy markets of northern Mexico.

Aquila Assaults Texas with USGT Buy

Moving ahead with its strategy to focus on southwestern andwestern markets, Aquila Energy announced yesterday it has purchasedU.S. Gas Transportation (USGT) for an undisclosed price. Bothcompanies expect the deal to close by the end of the month.

Western Gas Purchases Midwest System

Western Gas Resources, Inc. announced yesterday that itswholly-owned subsidiary, Western Gas Resources-Oklahoma, Inc.(WGRO), purchased Panhandle Gathering Co.’s (PGC) 50% interest inWestana Gathering Co. for an undisclosed sum. The transaction hasan effective date of Jan. 1, 2000 and gives WGRO full ownership ofthe company.

Conectiv Expands its PA Influence

Conectiv Energy Supply, Inc. has purchased the assets of thePennsylvania office of Black Hills Energy Resources, a gasmarketing operation that was a subsidiary of Black Hills Corp. Thepurchase brings Conectiv an office located in Allentown, PA, thatserves more than 300 gas customers in the tri-state area. Thecustomers primarily are industrial and commercial consumers in theUGI, PECO, Penn Fuel, and Columbia of Pennsylvania service areas.
