While some natural gas-fired power generation projects still in the planning stage are being deferred, those under construction are going ahead, and the battle is moving into the marketing of new online power supplies, according to Arlington, VA-based Energy Ventures Analysis (EVA).

Piedmont Natural Gas is planning to build a new pipeline to deliver gas supplies to Duke Power’s Mill Creek gas turbine electric generation facility, which is scheduled to go into service by June 2003. The peaking plant will use eight simple cycle turbines to generate 640 MW of power. It will be located in Cherokee County, SC.

Meanwhile, the council is keeping a close eye on the extremely low hydro situation, whose impact has been eased by a combination of emergency generation units and shutdown of major industrial plants.
