Veresen Inc. has struck a preliminary agreement for more capacity at the proposed Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Coos Bay in Oregon. ITOCHU Corp. tentatively agreed to purchase 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of liquefaction capacity for a 20-year term.

Calgary-based Veresen Inc. plans to ask FERC for a rehearing of its proposal to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal and connecting transmission pipeline along the south-central coast of Oregon, which the Commission rejected earlier this month (see Daily GPI,March 14).

A week after a major setback at FERC for its proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in Oregon, Canadian-based Veresen Inc. on Tuesday signed a long-term capacity agreement for its Jordan Cove LNG facility with Tokyo-based electric utility joint venture JERA Co. Inc.

FERC last Friday rejected Canadian-based Veresen Inc.’s proposed Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project in Oregon, citing problems with its Pacific Connector pipeline link to tap western Canada and U.S. Rockies supplies, along with the project’s lack of contracts from buyers.

Although it is not specifically called out as a major regulatory checkpoint, for the third time in nearly two years, the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD) has put on hold an application for coastal management certification for the proposed multi-billion-dollar Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas (LNG) project along the state’s south-central coast.

The Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project and connecting pipeline in Oregon is close to both getting a final FERC approval and to announcing an initial agreement with an anchor shipper of western Canadian and U.S. Rockies gas supplies to Asia, the CEO for the project said.
