Encana Corp. late Monday launched a bid that would enable it to double its Permian Basin well count in 2017 with an equity offer to raise more than $1 billion.

Encana Corp., one of the largest North American natural gas producers, is so encouraged by a spate of recent efficiency improvements and rising production that it has increased both its 2016 production guidance and capital guidance.

Encana Corp. agreed Tuesday to sell Birchcliff Energy Ltd. its Gordondale properties in the Montney formation for $488 million (C$625 million).

Private equity-backed Navitas Midstream Partners LLC agreed Tuesday to expand its natural gas pipeline system in the Permian Basin, initially for Encana Corp., in a long-term agreement that would give it combined processing capacity of 155 MMcf/d in the Midland sub-basin.

The Montney formation by 2020 is expected to grow to 7 Bcf/d, representing 38% of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin’s production, and Encana Corp. expects to be leading the charge, executives said Tuesday.
