The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) said it will allow Emera CNG LLC to export domestically produced compressed natural gas (CNG) to countries that do not have a free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States.

Emera CNG LLC, a would-be exporter of compressed natural gas to the Caribbean, has applied at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for export authorization employing a “little guys to the front of the line” rationale.

In a move aimed at diversifying the company’s northeastern U.S. power generation portfolio, Halifax, Nova Scotia-based Emera Inc. reported Wednesday that it has entered into a $541 million agreement to purchase three combined-cycle gas-fired electricity generating facilities in New England from Capital Power Corp.

Even though Emera’s Brunswick Pipeline has been under construction since November 2007, the project was dealt a small blow early last week when Canada’s National Energy Board (NEB) decided to reject a portion of the pipeline route based on the objection of Galbraith Construction Ltd. and Galbraith Equipment Co. Ltd.

In approving Emera Brunswick Pipeline, the NEB called it a step to use LNG to secure the northeastern United States as an “anchor market” for continued development of gas service on both the American and Canadian Atlantic seaboard.

Greyhawk Gas Storage Co. LLC, a joint venture between Falcon Gas Storage Co. Inc. and Emera Inc., will hold an open season beginning Monday (March 17) for capacity at its Wyckoff Gas Storage Project in Steuben County, NY. Up to 6 Bcf of working gas storage capacity will be available on a firm basis for terms ranging from two-to-10 years beginning October 2004.
