Mitchell Energy Doubles Production in N. Texas

Mitchell Energy & Development’s gas production in NorthTexas is soaring. The company announced that its developmentprogram in the Newark East Barnett shale field is exceedingexpectations. In a little more than a year’s time, the company’sgross natural gas production in the Barnett field has doubled to172 MMcf/d. At this rate, Mitchell Energy will meet, and exceed itstarget growth of 15% this year.

California-Delivered Gas Tops $5/Mcf

Much like on the East Coast a couple of weeks ago, arecord-setting heat wave set in over the weekend in California andthe desert Southwest. The effect on western peaking power pricesMonday wasn’t nearly as dramatic as the $6,000/MWh numbers hitearlier this month in the New England pool; however, gas pricesshowed a much greater impact this time.

Ocean Energy, Inc. said yesterday that it has agreed to sell allof its interests and assets in its East Bay Complex for $86million. The buyer’s identity was not disclosed. The propertiesconsist of South Pass 24, South Pass 27 and South Pass 39 Fields,located in the Mississippi Delta Region of the Gulf of Mexico. Thetransaction is expected to close March 31 subject to normal andcustomary conditions. CEO James Hackett said in a statement thatthe move was made in order to high-grade Ocean’s balance sheet andgain capital so that it could accumulate higher margin inventory.
