Calpine Corp. of San Jose, CA, and North Dartmouth-MA basedEnergy Management Inc. formed a new power marketing joint venture,Calpine/EMI Marketing, LLC, which will sell power and transmissioncapacity in New England from new generation facilities in theregion.

Calpine/EMI New England’s power portfolio currently includesthree gas-fired power plants under construction in Massachusetts,Rhode Island and Maine. Totaling 700 MW of capacity, the firstphase of these facilities, the 169 MW gas-fired Dighton Power Plantin Massachusetts, will begin energy deliveries as early as thesecond quarter of 1999. The Tiverton, RI, and Rumford, ME, plants,totaling 530 MW, are slated for start-up during the second quarterof 2000. Output from all of these plants will feed directly intothe New England Power Pool (NEPOOL) and will service adjoiningareas in the New York Power Pool and Pennsylvania-NewJersey-Maryland regions.

“Calpine/EMI Marketing is uniquely positioned to compete in NewEngland’s newly deregulated power industry,” said company PresidentTayeb Tahir. “Our team of energy professionals and unique regionalpower system will provide New England customers access to newsources of clean, reliable and low-cost energy.” Tahir, formallypresident of EnerZ, will lead the new company’s management team aspresident. Joining Tahir from EMI are Ed Rilkoff, vice president;Dan Ciullo, director of power marketing; and Chris Sherman, managerof contract administration. Jim Brown, formerly of Calpine, is thedirector of risk management.

Calpine currently has 5,900 MW of capacity in operation, underconstruction or in announced development, and Energy Management has835 MW of capacity in operation, under construction or indevelopment.
