San Jose, CA-based Calpine Corp. announced yesterday it hascompleted the acquisitions of the remaining 50% interests in twonatural gas-fired power generation facilities from two affiliatesof Statoil Energy Inc. of Alexandria, VA, for $71 million.

With this transaction, Calpine adds 74 MW of generation to itsrapidly expanding Northeast power portfolio. It now completely ownsthe Kennedy International Airport Power Plant, a 107-MWco-generation facility in Queens, NY, that provides electricity andthermal energy to the New York and New Jersey Port Authority foruse at the John F. Kennedy International Airport under a long-termpower sales agreement, as well as power to Consolidated Edison ofNew York, other utility customers and the New York Power Authority.The remaining 50% interest in this facility was acquired fromStatoil Energy KIA Inc.

Calpine also now fully owns the 40 MW Stony Brook Powerco-generation plant that produces electricity and steam for sale toNew York State University under a long-term sales agreement, andprovides excess power to the Long Island Power Authority. Calpinebought the remaining 50% interest in Stony Brook from StatoilEnergy Long Island Inc.

Calpine touts itself as a new leader in the Northeast powermarket, with 540 net MW of generation in operation, 888 net MWunder construction, and 1,585 net MW under announced development inConnecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York,Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
