MarketSpan Changes Name to KeySpan
After three months operating as MarketSpan Corp., the company
formed by the merger of Brooklyn Union Gas parent KeySpan Energy
and Long Island Lighting and Power, has decided to change its name
to KeySpan Energy. CEO Robert B. Catell said the decision was made
because of KeySpan's superior name recognition in its service
territory. The company will trade on the New York Stock Exchange
under the symbol KSE.
"Through our unregulated subsidiaries, the KeySpan name has
continued to grow in recognition," said Catell. "The change to
KeySpan will reestablish a name with excellent brand equity and
positive recognition among all our constituencies. We want to build
on the values that the KeySpan name represents."
Most of the company's subsidiaries have taken on the KeySpan
name over the past year, but some consumers, on Long Island for
example, have had to do business with four corporate subsidiaries
with four different names. A spokesman said the change partly is
designed to simplify things for consumers.
KeySpan's principal subsidiary is Brooklyn Union, which provides
natural gas service to 1.6 million customers in Brooklyn, Queens
and Staten Island, and in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long
