MarketSpan Changes Name to KeySpan

After three months operating as MarketSpan Corp., the company formed by the merger of Brooklyn Union Gas parent KeySpan Energy and Long Island Lighting and Power, has decided to change its name to KeySpan Energy. CEO Robert B. Catell said the decision was made because of KeySpan's superior name recognition in its service territory. The company will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol KSE.

"Through our unregulated subsidiaries, the KeySpan name has continued to grow in recognition," said Catell. "The change to KeySpan will reestablish a name with excellent brand equity and positive recognition among all our constituencies. We want to build on the values that the KeySpan name represents."

Most of the company's subsidiaries have taken on the KeySpan name over the past year, but some consumers, on Long Island for example, have had to do business with four corporate subsidiaries with four different names. A spokesman said the change partly is designed to simplify things for consumers.

KeySpan's principal subsidiary is Brooklyn Union, which provides natural gas service to 1.6 million customers in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, and in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island.
