Alliant Energy Corp. subsidiary Interstate Power and Light Co. (IP&L) said it will request a rate hike from the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) in mid-April for its natural gas services in the state. The increase would recover the costs of improvements IP&L has made to its natural gas delivery system infrastructure in Iowa over the last three years.

IP&L’s rate request will utilize a change in Iowa law enacted during the 2004 state legislative session, which grants utilities the option to implement interim rates 10 days after the filing of the requested rate change with the IUB. IP&L is seeking an annual overall average revenue increase of approximately $18.7 million (6.5%). The specific percentage impact upon customers’ total bills will vary by customer class and for transport customers. Transport customers purchase natural gas from other suppliers, but use IP&L’s distribution system to transport their gas supply.

The interim rates would be implemented by IP&L on April 25, and would remain in effect until the IUB issues a final rate case decision.
