Enron Capital & Trade Resources Corp. (ECT) chose IONATechnologies’ Orbix and OrbixTalk products for real-time energytrading. The new trading system, which enables Enron traders tocapture and process complex deals, currently supports natural gastrading and later will be extended to support electricity and otherenergy commodities. ECT’s trading system, called Sitara, alsoallows traders to perform real-time portfolio and positionmanagement. The new system has been deployed in Houston and will bedeployed worldwide.

“Most of our strategic information system initiatives are CORBAbased,” said Tilak Mandadi, director of information technology forECT. “An open distributed objects approach is critical to achievethe flexibility and scalability we desire.”

The real-time aspects of the trading system, which are criticalfor ECT’s traders, have been developed using OrbixTalk. Traders canmonitor and manage changes in portfolios in real time. Besides thenew trading system, work is underway on other ECT projects usingOrbix, OrbixTalk, IONA’s Java product OrbixWeb and IONA’sOrbixCOMet, which integrates the CORBA and COM standards.

“The new systems we are developing are critical to support boththe current trading operations as well as accommodate the explosivegrowth we are seeing in energy commodity trading,” said AnthonyDayao, director of energy trading systems for ECT.

IONA Technologies was founded in 1991. Orbix is used by morethan 3,500 businesses worldwide.
