Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line announced that it is currently in the planning stages to develop an expansion of its pipeline system in the Northeast United States. Known as the Sentinel Expansion Project, Transco said the endeavor could have a capital cost of up to $300 million.

Nova Scotia Unveils Independent Energy Strategy for Province

As its offshore energy sector grows and sets it further apart from other Canadian provinces, Nova Scotia last Wednesday released a new energy strategy that involves, among other things, establishing a Department of Energy, introducing limited competition for some electric power customers, adding a royalty trust from offshore proceeds and setting new air pollution standards. The strategy also expects “major future benefits” from using natural gas and has set a plan in motion to remove barriers that would allow the new system to operate on a firm commercial basis.

Reliant Unveils Natural Gas Index, Risk Management Tools

Reliant Energy Wholesale Group unveiled a new natural gas index and associated financial risk management instrument, designed to enable natural gas traders to better hedge risk for their companies and portfolio clients during the heating season. The Weather-Sensitive Gas Load Index (WGLI) measures current and forecasted residential and commercial natural gas consumption. To work with the index, Reliant has developed a financial instrument tailored for gas traders, called the WGLI Swap.
