EOC Shippers Challenge El Paso Project

In light of expanding markets being served by El Paso NaturalGas’ South Mainline, East-of-California (EOC) shippers haveexpressed concern with the pipeline’s “Line 2000 Project” in whichit seeks to abandon six aging compressor facilities and replacethem with nearly 785 miles of converted line that would loop muchof its existing system. The rub is that the proposed project wouldnot create any new capacity.

FPL Exits Northeast Retail; PP&L Picks Up Slack

Gas and electricity customers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey -previously served by Florida-based FPL Energy Services – soon willbecome customers of PP&L Energy Plus. PP&L EnergyPlus Co.,the retail marketing arm of PP&L Resources Inc., agreed toserve the customers after FPL Energy Services decided to exit thecompetitive energy markets in the Northeast. Terms of thetransaction were not disclosed.

St. Johns Lateral Approved, but Tribal Issues Remain Hot

For the second time this fall, Canada’s National Energy Boardserved notice it will not halt gas pipeline projects to awaitresolutions of age-old Indian grievances but it did issue a pleafor both sides in a dispute to make peace for the good of allconcerned. The signal arrived in an approval of a second Maritimesspur, called the Saint John Lateral, off the new Maritimes &Northeast pipeline. The $62 million lateral is designed to servedomestic customers in New Brunswick along its route to New Englandfrom the Sable Offshore Energy Project.

Cotter, who has more than 20 years of experience inthe marketing and trading of electricity, gas and oil, has servedas senior vice president-marketing for PP&L EnergyPlus,PP&L Inc.’s electricity sales subsidiary. He replaces MichaelT. Steffes, who last week resigned from PP&L, Inc. to pursueother interests. Cotter has been serving in the PP&L EnergyPlussenior vice president position since October.

Producers addled by low prices could take some comfort from atasty lunch served up with a cheerful prediction. Brad Karp,president of Duke Energy Trading and Marketing, told a producerluncheon in Houston last week his company is pretty bullish on gasprices long term.

MMS Notices Proposed East Gulf Lease Sale

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals ManagementService (MMS) served official notice Tuesday of its intentions tohold lease sale 181 for 5.949 million acres in the eastern Gulf ofMexico. The MMS issued a Call for Interest and Information and aNotice of Intent (NOI), which gives interested parties 60 days tocomment on the proposed sale. The MMS tentatively scheduled thesale for December 2001. An MMS spokesperson said no minimum bid hasbeen set.

GA Company Providing Billing for Canadian Marketers

Two Canadian energy retailers soon will be served byAtlanta-based Utilipro Inc., provider of customer care solutions.Utilipro recently signed a letter of intent with Direct EnergyMarketing Limited (DEML), Canada’s largest independent gasmarketer, and Apollo Gas Inc. (AGI), a subsidiary of Apollo GasIncome Fund, to directly bill customers for gas and energy-relatedservices.
