The U.S. Coast Guard in New Orleans last Friday enlisted two boats, a cutter, two helicopters and a plane to search for two personnel missing from an oil and natural gas production rig that experienced an explosion and fire at about 8:45 a.m. CST.

The head of Wyoming’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is retiring, and Gov. Matt Mead said on Monday that he is starting a search for a replacement. DEQ Director John Corra, who has headed the department for two different governors since 2003, will stay on the job until October. Mead lauded Corra for setting “a standard for effective and balanced regulation with fiscal prudence.” Mead has asked for interested candidates to submit a letter of interest and resume to his office (2090 W. 24th St. Cheyenne, WY, 82002).

The well-worn paths for global natural gas, traditionally traced along the trade flows of liquefied natural gas (LNG) expansions, have been rerouted as unconventional gas — and especially shale — has washed out old bridges to the past, according to a report by the International Gas Union (IGU) and IHS Inc.

Independent petroleum engineering consultant Bob King has been named the interim supervisor of the WyomingOil and Gas Conservation Commission (OGCC) as the state searches for a permanent replacement for Tom Doll, who resigned effective July 2 (see Shale Daily, June 18). King, who has worked in the state’s oil and gas industry for 30 years, served in a similar capacity on an interim basis in 2008-2009, according to Gov. Matt Mead. “The OGCC has a critical role, and Bob’s experience will provide necessary leadership as we begin the search for a permanent supervisor,” Mead said. State law requires the supervisor position to be filled by a petroleum engineer or petroleum geologist.
