Enron’s Causey Pleads Guilty, to Cooperate in Lay, Skilling Trial

Enron Corp.’s former top accountant on Wednesday pleaded guilty to securities fraud and agreed to help pursue convictions against the company’s founder and former Chairman Kenneth Lay and former President and CEO Jeffrey Skilling. Causey had been scheduled to go to trial with Lay and Skilling on Jan. 17 in Houston. However, following Causey’s plea, defense attorneys requested that the trial be delayed.

PG&E to Build Second Pipeline Linking CA Storage with Backbone System

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. earlier this month decided to pursue construction of a backup pipeline along a different route through the Sacramento Delta to link its major underground storage facility with its backbone transmission pipeline system. If the permitting and construction proceed as planned, the added link could be operational in November 2006, the utility said Friday.

Sponsors of the proposed Rabaska LNG terminal still have three other sites near Quebec City to pursue, after citizens resoundingly defeated a plan earlier this week to locate the receiving terminal in the Beaumont section of the city. Residents of Beaumont resoundingly rejected the proposal with 72% voting against it. Opponents of the LNG project claimed it would be a safety hazard and would spoil the river view. The government of Quebec supports the project as necessary to supply energy in the area. Sponsors of the project include Gaz Metro, Enbridge and Gaz de France.

Shell to Pursue More LNG Projects, to Sell $10-12B in Assets

At a strategy review in London Wednesday, Shell outlined its plans for the coming years, announcing it would extend its liquefied natural gas (LNG) leadership position and divest of $10-12 billion in assets between now and 2006. To succeed in reestablishing its leading position, the number three oil major plans to spend $45 billion through 2006, nearly all of it on upstream activities.

Western governors announced last week that they have unanimously agreed to pursue a regional approach to boosting renewable energy sources and energy efficiency through the bipartisan Western Governors’ Association (WGA), according to an announcement from California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, co-leader of the effort along with New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, the current chairman of the governors’ group.
