Price Drops Finally Acknowledge Mild Weather

After refusing to bow to weak weather fundamentals in the previous two days, prices practically did a curtsy for weather Friday with declines ranging from about a dime to a quarter. The softness was fairly homogenous across geographic areas, although Northeast citygates and several western points tended to garner most of the drops of 20 cents or more.

Pacific Gas & Electric, which Monday lifted an OFO that had been in effect for the previous two days, declared a new systemwide Stage 2 high-inventory OFO for Wednesday’s gas day. Penalties of $1/Dth were unchanged, but whereas the weekend OFOs had relatively lenient tolerances of 9% and 12% for positive daily imbalances, the new order set a stringent tolerance of zero.

Screen Retreat Likely to Mean Lower Cash Numbers

Cash prices made some effort at following the previous day’s gas futures market Wednesday, but it was rather half-hearted. Record crude numbers and a spike of nearly a quarter in July natural gas futures on Tuesday apparently made less impression on physical gas traders than somewhat weak fundamentals. Single-digit gains ruled as Wednesday’s quotes ranged from flat to barely more than a dime higher.

While falling short of the previous July high of $6.805 set on May 25, the July natural gas futures contract put theories that the rally was over on hold, settling up 23.9 cents on the day to close at $6.681.

Idaho Gas Utility Goes for 10% Rate Hike

Following much bigger gas cost rate changes in the two previous years, Intermountain Gas, a natural gas distribution company in southern Idaho, has asked state regulators for a $22.1 million, or 10%, boost in rates, effective July 1. The Idaho Public Utilities Commission has asked for comments on the annual purchased gas adjustment (PGA) by June 11.
