With Normal Winter Weather, Consultants See Gas Prices Correcting in 2006

If this winter proves neither too cold nor too warm, with overall normal heating degree days (HDDs), natural gas storage should be tighter than last year but still well above 10-year norms, according to energy consultant Stephen Smith. However, he said the notion of being “well above” 10-year norms will offer little comfort to those concerned about high natural gas prices.

Futures Flat Tuesday as Storage Bears and Technical Bulls Square Off

In what was one of the quietest sessions in recent memory, the natural gas futures market chopped mostly sideways Tuesday as neither bull nor bear was able to influence a move in their favor. The March contract closed at $6.316, down a half cent for the session and near the middle of its $6.26-40 trading range on the day.

Although Friday’s price declines were neither universal nor as severe as those on some Fridays earlier in October, Monday’s market did match up with a couple of predecessors in seeing large rebounds across the board. Gains were as small as about 35 cents, but a big majority were half a dollar or more and ran as high as a little more than 90 cents at the PG&E citygate.

Neither FERC nor the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) found any evidence of manipulation in sharp upward movement of natural gas prices in late 2003, the agencies announced last Monday. The CFTC blamed fundamentals, including the sudden onslaught of cold weather and storage projections.
