Following Tuesday’s minor increase, January natural gas futures sprung higher Wednesday as traders covered short positions and some weather forecasters left the door open for some colder temperatures later in the month. After reaching a high of $7.785, the prompt month dropped down to close at $7.673, still good for a 24.3-cent gain on the day.

Natural Gas Gets Minor Mention in Kerry-Edwards Energy Plan
Only a small part of the energy plan that was officially released Friday by Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry and vice-presidential candidate John Edwards was devoted to natural gas. Most of the proposal focused on crude oil, electricity, alternative fuels and coal.

Except for minor softness in the Midcontinent/Midwest and Northeast areas, the East was dominated by flat pricing Thursday. The market tended to be a bit weaker at western points, which ranged from flat to down more than 15 cents (PG&E citygate).
