Traders Relocate as TX Braces for Rita; Prices Up

Most if not all of the big Houston-area energy trading shops are setting up satellite offices in other locations in order to try to maintain business operations Thursday and Friday in the event that Hurricane Rita draws a bead on their city. With maximum sustained winds of 165 mph, Rita was classified as a Category Five storm Wednesday afternoon, the most dangerous hurricane category.

Modest Eastern Rallies Not Matched in the West

Predictions of a late-winter storm expected to bring snow and sleet (“perhaps a lot in some locations,” according to The Weather Channel) to eastern parts of the South Thursday helped to generate small rallies at most eastern points Wednesday. Cool Temps, Continuing Shut-ins Help Boost Cash a Nickel or More

Cash prices rose a nickel or more at most locations on Wednesday, with most Gulf Coast points up 5-8 cents, Midcontinent and Midwest quotes slightly higher and some points farther West with double digit increases. Although many industry observers were walking around scratching their heads, a few sources noted that heating demand is picking up and the continuing production shut-ins in the Gulf are likely to significantly reduce storage injection volumes.
