Predictions of a late-winter storm expected to bring snow and sleet (“perhaps a lot in some locations,” according to The Weather Channel) to eastern parts of the South Thursday helped to generate small rallies at most eastern points Wednesday. Virtually all increases were less than a dime, while a few scattered points were flat to barely lower.

Cash prices rose a nickel or more at most locations on Wednesday, with most Gulf Coast points up 5-8 cents, Midcontinent and Midwest quotes slightly higher and some points farther West with double digit increases. Although many industry observers were walking around scratching their heads, a few sources noted that heating demand is picking up and the continuing production shut-ins in the Gulf are likely to significantly reduce storage injection volumes.

Spot prices rebounded a quarter or more from weekend levels at most locations yesterday with many points exceeding bidweek levels in response to the futures increase on Nymex and some heating load in East Texas and California.

Market observers watched in disbelief yesterday as prices atsome locations rocketed up more than $1 from Wednesday’s levels.Most cash points made daily gains of between 40 and 50 cents, anddaily price ranges were enormous.
