Near-Term Weather Outlook Softens Cash, Yet Futures Jump

The cash market on average fell around a nickel Tuesday with pervasive weakness seen in all sections of the country. The Midwest was weak, but isolated gains were noted at Northeast points. East and Rockies locations fell. At the close of futures trading, December had risen 11.3 cents to $3.832 and January had gained 10.7 cents to $3.944. January crude oil tumbled $2.53 to $86.75/bbl on hints of a break in Middle East fighting.

Chesapeake to Resume Well Completions in Pennsylvania

Chesapeake Energy Corp. said Friday it will immediately resume completion operations in Pennsylvania, a little more than three weeks after voluntarily suspending them following a well blowout in the northeast part of the state.

Transportation Notes

Tennessee declared a force majeure event of an unspecified nature Friday for the 26-inch diameter 523M-100 line south of Cocodrie, LA. Tennessee said it has isolated the pipe section and is in the process of lowering the pressure for further analysis. Five Ship Shoal and two South Pelto meters were required to shut in, but Tennessee said it is allowing associated nominations to remain in place at this time.

Transco reported finding a leak on its 24-inch diameter mainline in Kleberg County, TX, and said Monday the impacted segment had been isolated to assess damage and determine repair plans. Seven meters in the area have been shut in until further notice.

No Capacity Impact from TransCanada Rupture in Ontario

TransCanada reported experiencing a mainline rupture Saturday upstream of Station 112 in Ontario. The pipeline said it had isolated the affected section, but did not anticipate any capacity restrictions as a result of the event.

End-of-January Prices Falter in Most of Market

Despite frigid weather remaining in several areas Friday, some isolated warming trends helped push cash prices lower at most points Thursday. The small decline by expiring February futures a day earlier and the fact that a weekend day was involved in Thursday’s deals were other bearish influences.

Futures Fall Sixth Consecutive Day, But $7 Support Remains

January natural gas futures settled lower for a sixth consecutive regular session on Tuesday as isolated near-term cold would appear to be no match for warmer-than-normal winter temperature forecasts, more than comfortable natural gas storage levels and significant weakness in neighboring crude futures. January natural gas reached a low of $7.080 before closing Tuesday at $7.155, down 5.9 cents from Monday.

Hoping last week’s transmission emergency that resulted in isolated rolling blackouts will make a difference, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Wednesday reintroduced his plan to reorganize the state’s scattered energy functions into one cabinet-level Energy Department.
