BLM Report Backs Gas Wells in Breaks Monument

An environmental analysis by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has found that approving eight natural gas wells on existing federal leases north of the Missouri River within and adjacent to the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in Montana would have little environmental impact. BLM has recommended approval of the wells, but said it will not make a final decision until after a public comment period ends in mid-February.

Burlington Canada Sets Environmental Standards for Sour Gas Production & Transport

The Calgary arm of a U.S.-based producer has found a key to keep access to the hazardous 30% of western Canadian natural gas – bend over backwards to make peace with increasingly fearful communities. Burlington Resources Canada Energy Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of its Houston namesake, set a new standard for securing co-operation with development of “sour” gas, laced with hazardous hydrogen-sulphide.

Following its quarterly study, the Energy Performance Review (EPR) found that 10 of the largest US-based integrated petroleum companies reported consolidated earnings before special items totaling $11 billion for the third quarter of 2001, off one-third from the near-record $15.6 billion posted for the second quarter of the year. The mark also reflects nearly a one-third reduction from the $15.9 billion posted for the third quarter of 2000, according to the group’s most recent data.

Kerr-McGee Finds 300-500 Bcf of Deepwater Gulf Reserves

Kerr-McGee Corp. said it found 300-500 Bcf of gas reserves in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico at its Red Hawk prospect on Garden Banks block 877. Located in more than 5,300 feet of water, the 23,500-foot discovery well encountered more than 135 feet of gas and gas condensate pay in two zones. A successful updip appraisal sidetrack to the discovery encountered about 175 feet of gas and gas condensate pay.

Oneok Fined for Contempt by OCC Judge

An administrative law judge at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission last week found Oneok and two of its subsidiaries, Oklahoma Energy Marketing and Trading and Oneok Gas Storage, in contempt for their refusal to provide documentation of their gas sales. The judge recommended to the commission that the companies be fined $2,000 per day retroactive to May 8 and lasting until they comply with the commission order.
