Canadian Gas Exports to US Dip 5.3% This Year

The end is in sight for the long winning streak chalked up by Canadian natural-gas exporters, as deliveries remain consistently off their formerly torrid pace in setting 14 consecutive annual sales records in the United States. Canadian gas deliveries to the U.S. fell by 5.3% to 2.745 Tcf in the first three-quarters of the current gas contract year that ends Oct. 31 from 2.9 Tcf in the same period of 2000-01, the National Energy Board reports.

WI Lateral to Guardian Delayed to Resolve Permits, Land Access

Milwaukee-based We Energies (formerly Wisconsin Energy Corp.) is delaying construction of a 38-mile natural gas lateral extension into the Guardian pipeline project until the spring of 2003, but Guardian will remain on schedule for an in-service date later this year, a spokeswoman said. We Energies is halting construction of the lateral through Jefferson and Waukesha counties until next year to resolve some permit and land acquisition issues.

Aquila to Cut Jobs in State-Based Restructuring of Utility Operations

Aquila Inc., formerly UtiliCorp United, announced that it will reduce its workforce as part of a corporate restructuring program that will lead to seven state-focused utility operations. The state-based organizational structure is designed to provide greater operational accountability within Aquila’s seven-state utility operations that serve 1.3 million natural gas and electricity customers in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota.

(formerly UtiliCorp United Inc.), including a credit rating downgrade by Fitch Ratings, the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) has instituted an investigation to determine the impact of the company’s unregulated businesses on the ability of its jurisdictional utilities to serve the public.

ICE Gas Volumes Rise 37% from Dec. Levels, Power is Up 51%

Activity continues to grow by leaps and bounds on the IntercontinentalExchange (ICE) commodity marketplace as traders who formerly did a significant amount of their business on EnronOnline flock to the ICE platform. The company said average daily activity systemwide is up 30% compared to only one month ago. A total of 630 Bcf of gas was traded on Jan. 9 alone, and 17 million MWh was traded on Jan. 14, setting a new daily record.

LP, formerly Koch Gateway Pipeline, last week said the open season for the company’s proposed $1 billion Gulf Pines Pipeline was “extremely successful,” adding that response to the 1 Bcf/d line from the Southeast markets far exceeded the company’s expectations. The open season concluded on Sept. 19.

Williams Names Malcolm President, COO; Bailey to Retire

The board of directors of Williams named Steven J. Malcolm president and COO effective immediately. Formerly president and CEO of Williams Energy Services and executive vice president of Williams, Malcolm also was elected to the board. Keith E. Bailey, 59, will relinquish his responsibilities as president of the company and will remain chairman and CEO until his expected retirement at the next annual meeting of shareholders on May 17, 2002. Bailey was elected president in 1992 and chairman in 1994.
