As further indication that the anti-hydraulic fracturing (fracking) fever is spreading in Colorado, a coalition of more than 40 organizations has called for Gov. John Hickenlooper to ask for a top state energy official’s resignation, and a U.S. congressman from the state has picked up the opposition fervor from his constituents and environmental groups.

Speculation surrounding the United States Natural Gas Fund’s (UNG) impact on the natural gas futures market has reached a fever pitch, and now some analysts are advising investors that the commodity exchange-traded fund (ETF) is not even a good investment. According to a new Raymond James & Associates report, investors are “better off” investing in gas-weighted exploration and production (E&P) companies than in UNG.

Range-Bound Futures Settle Lower; Summer Temps, Hurricane Picture Loom

With April expiration occurring during the week and traders suffering from a little spring fever as temperatures moved higher, May natural gas futures ventured lower Friday on low-volume trading. After putting in a $7.120 low on the day, the prompt month rebounded a little to settle at $7.210, down 27.7 cents for the day and 24.7 cents lower than the contract’s close in the previous week.

Williams Plans to Expand Northwest by 276 MMcf/d

Williams apparently still has the western pipeline expansion fever. The company announced the fourth expansion project in the Pacific Northwest for Northwest Pipeline and all four are expected to be in service in the next two years. This latest project, Evergreen, is a mainline expansion that will add 276 MMcf/d to serve new power generation in Washington. The $200 million looping and compression project will include the addition of 26 miles of pipeline in Skagit, King and Pierce counties and 90,000 hp of compression at eight existing stations.
