U.S. Rig Count Shows Slight Decline

During the week ended Nov. 2, Houston-based Baker Hughes reported that the number of rigs searching for oil and gas in the United States fell by five from the previous week to 1,058. Of the U.S. rigs, 874 were drilling for natural gas and 184 were searching for oil. Research from a year ago showed that the country’s rig count was notched at 1,078.

NiSource Reports 3Q Loss

NiSource Inc. reported net income of $160.7 million, or $0.78 per basic share, for the nine months ended Sept. 30 versus net income of $155 million, or $1.27 per basic share for the same period last year. But the two are not comparable, NiSource said, because of its acquisition Nov. 1, 2000 of Columbia Energy Group.

National Fuel Sees 33% Annual Earnings Increase

Buffalo-based National Fuel Gas Co. reported for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2001 earnings of $169.5 million, or $2.11 per diluted share, a 33% increase over fiscal 2000 earnings of $127.2 million, or $1.61 per diluted share the previous year. The 2001 results were exclusive of a non-cash write-down of subsidiary Seneca Resources Corp.’s oil and gas assets in the amount of $104 million after tax, or $1.29 per diluted share.

Transportation Notes

Florida Gas Transmission ended an Overage Alert Day notice Thursday. PG&E Gas Transmission-Northwest (GTN) announced a maintenance postponement. An outage of compressor Unit 4B, previously scheduled for Wednesday through today, is now set for Oct. 3-5. It will limit Kingsgate capacity to 2,390 MMcf/d. GTN also said it will begin an unscheduled overhaul of the A compressor at Station 11 next Tuesday, The work, which will continue through Sept. 30, will cut capacity through Station 14 to 1,870 MMcf/d.

Portland General Eyed By Scot Power

Just days after Enron Corp. ended a bid to sell Portland General to Sierra Pacific Resources Corp. (see Daily GPI, April 27), Scottish Power Plc apparently decided to fling in an offer for the Oregon-based power utility. The West Coast utility would be fit geographically with Scot Power’s PacifiCorp, which is headquartered in Portland and operates in six U.S. states.
