After months of work, Texas Eastern Transmission (Tetco) has restored its Penn-Jersey system to full capacity after it was damaged in an explosion and fire in Westmoreland County, PA, earlier this year.

The rupture that knocked out full-service on a part of Williams’ Leidy Line in Northeast Pennsylvania in June 2015 was caused by corrosion, according to a report from the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).

Spectra Energy Corp. officials on Tuesday said a confluence of factors led to the April explosion of its Texas Eastern Transmission LP (Tetco) pipeline in Southwest Pennsylvania, mainly attributing the blast to significant corrosion that has changed the way it will inspect pipes going forward.

The kind of pipeline corrosion caused by microbes in the soil is a serious threat to onshore oil and natural gas systems and needs to be addressed by a global joint industry project, according to DNV GL, a global maritime and oil/gas safety consulting and accreditation organization.
