Nearly All Cash Points Retreat; Futures Suffer Technical Setback

Physical natural gas prices Tuesday for delivery Wednesday experienced broad and pervasive selling as a weak screen, expectations of sizeable storage builds, and no tropical activity pulled the plug on pricing. Overall, prices settled on average 8 cents lower, and virtually no points made it to the positive side of the trading ledger. At the close of futures trading, October had fallen 11 cents to $3.492 and November was down by 11.8 cents to $3.559. November crude oil fell 46 cents to $103.13/bbl.

Marcellus, Midcontinent No Match For Broad Cash Weakness; Futures Flounder

Physical natural gas prices for Tuesday delivery overall fell a penny on average Monday as most points fluctuated within a few cents of unchanged. Modest strength in the Midcontinent and double-digit gains at certain Marcellus points were unable to offset broad weakness elsewhere. At the close of trading October futures had retreated 8.5 cents to $3.602 and November was off 8.6 cents to $3.677. November crude oil dropped $1.16 to $103.59/bbl.

Transportation Notes

Effective Saturday (April 9) until further notice, Nicor Gas implemented pipeline caps for deliveries to its citygate. The OFO Cap Day “is necessary due to forecasted unseasonably warm weather over the weekend period resulting in reduced system demand,” the northern Illinois LDC said. It also halted Nicor Hub interruptible storage injection services until further notice but said withdrawals will continue to be accepted. See the bulletin board for further details.

Northeast Plunges; Blizzard Potential Has Most Points Near Flat

Despite lows still due to be around freezing or a little lower on Christmas Eve, Northeast citygate numbers tanked — often by $2-plus — Wednesday. But most of the cash market was up or down less than a dime from flat as The Weather Channel (TWC) said a potential blizzard in much of the central U.S. will make holiday travel “very dangerous or impossible over portions of the region.”

Northeast Sees Spikes, But Most Points Fall Again

Northeastern citygate spikes in anticipation of much colder regional weather early this week belied an overall market that continued to soften in most cases Friday. However, Thursday’s 4.8-cent uptick by April futures and forecasts of sub-freezing temperatures Sunday in the Midwest added several rising points in the Gulf Coast and Midwest to the Northeast gains Friday, in contrast to losses at nearly all points a day earlier.

Warming Trends Lead to Declines at Most Points

A few Gulf Coast points joined the Florida citygate and most of the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic citygates in sustaining Tuesday’s overall price advance through Wednesday, but most of the market dropped in response to some warming trends either already under way or in the forecast, and to relaxation or elimination of some cold weather-related pipeline restrictions.
