Sempra North Baja LNG Operations Continuing

Although it was still operating as usual on Friday, Sempra Energy’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal along the Pacific Coast of North Baja California in Mexico was facing a clouded future after a Mexican federal court issued apparent support for a long-standing lawsuit by a former landowner.

Transportation Notes

Baja Path capacity on the California Gas Transmission system of Pacific Gas & Electric will be limited to 830 MMcf/d, or 70% of normal, Wednesday and Thursday while a section of Line 300A is replaced. Another reduction to 1,050 MMcf/d (92%) will occur May 12-18 during hydro testing of the line.

First West Coast LNG Site to Stay Quiet in 2008

Sempra Energy’s Costa Azul facility in North Baja California, Mexico, the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal on the West Coast of North America, may sit mostly idle after it is deemed commercially available later this spring. Nevertheless, Sempra will earn a profit based on capacity payments from part of Royal Dutch Shell that holds a contract for half of the 1 Bcf/d terminal’s throughput.

CA LNG Proponents Push Ahead; Sempra Baja Terminal Looms Larger

With two major liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks now visible and half built along the Pacific Coast of North Baja California in Mexico and sponsor San Diego-based Sempra Energy talking about doubling the terminal’s 1 Bcf/d capacity by 2010, doubts are being raised about the four major Southern California LNG receiving terminal proposals in various stages of the regulatory approval processes. However, government officials, analysts and the four proponents say the other projects are in the race for the long haul.

Transportation Notes

PG&E said due to pipe replacement maintenance on the Baja path, the 300 MMcf/d Daggett interconnect with Kern River Gas Transmission (KRGT) will be shut in for 20 days starting June 10. No nominations will be processed for the KRGT Receipt/Delivery Points for gas days June 10 – 30. Any nominations already submitted through INSIDEtracc will be cut to zero for this time frame, PG&E said. For further details, call (800) 343-4743.
