Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta has announced that $3.6 million in grants will be awarded for 24 projects in 14 states to assist in the prevention of third-party damage to pipelines and other underground facilities.

Transwestern Pipeline last week said it had a successful open season for its proposed Sun Devil expansion, which, upon completion, will serve the Phoenix, AZ, natural gas market. The open season, which ended on Aug. 30, elicited requests for more than 1.3 Bcf/d — equal to the proposed capacity of the Sun Devil expansion, and nearly double the existing capacity of Transwestern, the Enron pipeline noted.

Columbia, SC-based SCANA Corp. has formed subsidiary SCG Pipeline Inc., which will concentrate on transporting natural gas in Georgia and South Carolina, delivering gas from interconnections with Southern Natural Gas and Southern LNG’s Elba Island liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal near Savannah, GA. SCG Pipeline also is now evaluating potential pipeline routes for an end point in Jasper County, SC, which is expected to begin commercial operations in November 2003.

Calpine Corp. subsidiary SkyGen Energy LLC has entered into a10-year agreement to supply Xcel Energy, formerly Public ServiceCo. of Colorado, with 336 MW of peaking capacity.

Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles unveiled a new five-year lease saleschedule last week that will include 16 areawide oil and gas leasesales through 2005, with acreage on the Cook Inlet, North Slope andFoothills and in Beaufort Sea.
