Reliant Energy Picks Illinois for Peaking Facility

In its latest bid to add generation assets to its growingportfolio, Reliant Energy selected a 125-acre plot of land inMcHenry County, IL, last week as the site to develop a 500 MW,gas-fired power plant. The cost of the project was not disclosed. AReliant spokesperson said the company hopes to have the plant inservice by mid-2001.

Avista Prepares for New Mexico Market Entrance

Avista Power said Tuesday it purchased a 20-acre site inLordsburg, NM from TNP Technologies and plans to put a $70 millionpower plant into service on the acreage by early 2000. The terms ofthe sale were not disclosed. The land contains four oldergenerators, which were in the process of being updated. All permitsand licenses will transfer to Avista Power and the transaction isexpected to close within 60 days.

HI Plans Rhode Island Merchant Plant

Houston Industries Power Generation, a subsidiary of HoustonIndustries, signed an option agreement to purchase a 33-acre sitefrom the R.I. Resource Recovery Corp. This site is the planned home for RI Hope Energy, a 500 MW merchant plant to servederegulated wholesale markets in Rhode Island and New England. RIHope Energy will be in an industrial park currently being developedby RIRRC in Johnston, RI.
