The energy services unit in San Diego-based Sempra Energy’s merchant energy businesses announced Monday it has a four-year deal to supply natural gas and related services to Caterpillar Inc.’s manufacturing locations in Illinois and its logistics services operations. Sempra said terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Sempra Energy Solutions–a part of the Global Enterprises companies for the utility holding company–has tried to differentiate itself in the energy services sector by concentrating on large national commercial and industrial customers, selling off its mass market operations in the sector. It promotes itself as providing “an integrated mix of services, such as facility management, supply and price-risk management, energy efficiency, energy-asset management, infrastructure ownership and information/billing services.”

“Caterpillar is a world-class organization that effectively manages more than 200 locations throughout the world,” said Bob Dickerman, president of Sempra Energy Solutions. “We offer customers like Caterpillar a high degree of security in relation to energy costs, which enables them to focus on the other demands of their business and become more efficient at the same time.”
