Mexico’s plans to re-export U.S. natural gas could make the country a major LNG hub, according to an industry analyst.

“Mexico currently imports around 6 Bcf/d of natural gas, mostly for power generation and industrial use,” Sergio Chapa, senior LNG analyst at Poten & Partners, told NGI’s Mexico GPI. “The dozen liquefied natural gas export projects that are either already under construction or on the drawing board would require at least another 9 Bcf/d.”

He added: “Most of the LNG export projects are located along already-existing pipelines that receive gas from the Permian Basin and other US sources.”
