Calgary-based Niska Gas Storage Canada ULC recently completed a 10.5 Bcf expansion of storage capacity at its AECO Hub (comprised of the Suffield and Countess facilities). Niska said the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board has approved modifications that will allow a further increase of 10 Bcf in its Countess facility in Alberta. At the conclusion of this expansion, the capacity of the Countess facility will be 60 Bcf (for a total of nearly 140 Bcf at the Niska AECO Hub facilities).

Colorado School of Mines is expected to draw on the its natural gas research and related energy disciplines for its new Unconventional Natural Gas Institute (UNGI). Officials said the UNGI will draw from the school’s expertise in petroleum engineering, geology, geophysics, petrophysics, chemical engineering and engineering. The interdisciplinary efforts are to be led by Jennifer Miskimins of the Mines petroleum engineering department. Based on research by Mines personnel, the Potential Gas Committee recently reported that domestic gas resources increased to 1,800 Tcf in 2008 from 1,300 Tcf in 2006 (see Daily GPI, June 19). Most of the increase was credited to unconventional resources, which include shale gas.
