Renewable natural gas is a biogas derived fuel that is captured from organic waste streams such as landfills, dairy and swine farms, wastewater treatment facilities, or food waste. RNG can be produced via three different processes, but the main one is from aneroebic digestion, where waste sources enter an anaerobic digester, which converts the waste into biogas. The biogas must then be processed to become pipeline quality that can be comingled with geologic natural gas. Said differently: Geologic and renewable natural gas can pass off as substitutes for one another, but they come from different sources. Geologic gas is the fossil fuel, while renewable gas is produced from organic waste material.
