Global natural gas markets were calm Monday despite a brief armed rebellion in Russia over the weekend that called into question President Vladimir Putin’s grip on power.

“The market seems to be reacting very little to events in Russia,” said Engie EnergyScan analysts. “One might say that this is to be expected, given that the apparent attempted putsch ended as quickly and surprisingly as it appeared over the weekend.”

An uprising by Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner mercenary group, was quickly deescalated and ended without violence. It’s another geopolitical wrinkle in the region, however, that introduces even more volatility for a gas market already on edge about supply risks.
