By 2005, Calpine Corp. expects to have an operating goal of70,000 MW of electric generating capacity in place, including60,000 MW of baseload capacity and 10,000 MW of peaking generation,which would position the San Jose, CA-based company as one of thelargest power providers in the United States.

Currently, Calpine has 5,000 MW of existing generation but italso has 23 projects under construction in U.S. markets. By the endof this year, it expects to double the size of its operatingportfolio when 11 of the current projects are anticipated to beonline.

Promising that the company would have the “cleanest and mostmodern electric generating fleet in the country, CEO PeterCartwright said, “Calpine is committed to repowering North America.As evidenced in California and other major energy marketsthroughout the U.S., demand is outstripping supply and inefficientplants are reaching the end of their effective operating lifespans.”

The company has 183 gas turbines now on order, which wouldgenerate more than 45,000 MW of electricity when operating in acombined-cycle configuration.
