AES Corp. of Arlington, VA is in the preliminary stages of plans to build a $400 million liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Baltimore County, MD on the site of the former Sparrows Point shipyard.

The proposed project is still in preliminary stages but is said to include a marine terminal, storage tanks and an 85-mile pipeline connection with an existing gas distribution system in suburban Philadelphia, according to a report in the Baltimore Sun.

The paper reported that AES has been contacting area community groups and politicians during at least six months of outreach. A community meeting is scheduled for Jan. 19. No press release has been issued on the project, an AES spokesperson said. The entity managing the project is AES Sparrows LNG LLC.

Baltimore County officials are reported to be studying the proposal, and the Department of Economic Development has had one meeting with AES, a spokesperson told the Sun. AES has a 99-year lease option on 60 acres at Sparrows Point, the paper said.

Maryland is the home of the Cove Point LNG terminal whose operator, Dominion Resources Inc., plans to double capacity at the Chesapeake Bay terminal in eastern Maryland by 6.8 Bcf to 14.6 Bcf by 2008 (see Daily GPI, June 15, 2004).
