Bulgaria and Turkey signed a long-term agreement on Tuesday giving Bulgaria access to Turkey’s LNG terminals via Turkey’s natural gas transmission grid.

The 13-year deal was signed by Bulgaria’s Bulgargaz EAD and Turkey’s Botas Petroleum Pipeline Co. It would allow Bulgaria to import up to 1.5 billion cubic meters (Bcm) of gas annually from Turkey, or roughly 53 Bcf, meeting nearly half of Bulgaria’s annual gas demand.

As a result of the agreement, Bulgaria would no longer need Russian gas imports and would take advantage of Turkey’s spare liquefied natural gas capacity. It could also help to diversify southeastern Europe’s gas supply mix.
