A coalition of 17 states, Washington, DC, and Quebec released last week an action plan to tackle transportation-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by calling for a “whole-of-government” approach to electrifying 100% of medium- and heavy-duty vehicle (MHDV) sales by 2050.

Together, the jurisdictions make up 36% of the nation’s total MHDVs. According to the plan, MHDVs are the second largest source of the United States’ transportation sector GHG emissions, after passenger cars and trucks. 

The plan outlined several recommendations for car manufacturers, electric utilities and utility regulators, so-called green banks, school districts, states and transit agencies to enable the transition to medium- and heavy-duty zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs).
