The North American rig count stepped up by seven in the tally released by Baker Hughes Inc. on Thursday, one day early because of the holiday. That was enough to push the census to 1,001 for the continent for the week ending July 2.

A few onshore explorers have signaled they plan to ramp up in a few select locations in the next couple of months, but that's the exception rather than the rule, with more pain for the sector still to come, an analyst said this week.

Texas oil and gas production has been trending downward, according to Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) data; meanwhile, permitting and completions activity are both off from year-ago levels.
