Flatness Reigns Except for Rockies, Southwest Gains

Rocky Mountains ski resort operators were starting to breathe alittle easier Tuesday. After many had missed traditional openingdates of Thanksgiving Day weekend or earlier, they welcomed asnowstorm that either was arriving or on its way. For much the samereason, Rockies/Pacific Northwest and Southwest points constitutedthe only region seeing meaningful price gains on either side of anickel Tuesday. The rest of the cash market was a sea of flatnessthat, unlike Monday, leaned slightly to the downside instead of theupside.

Local-Led Rally Lifts Futures to Late Gains

Fresh off a two-day, 24-cent price drop, natural gas futurestraded unchanged for most of the session Tuesday with light buyingand selling by trade accounts matching up nearly perfectly. Bymid-afternoon, however, it looked as if bears would make it atrifecta, as they successfully etched new lows for the Januarycontract down to $2.21. But after remaining on the sidelines formost of the day, speculators were seen as aggressive buyers intothe final bell. That enabled the January contract to finish on apositive note, up 4.7-cents to $2.271.

Andersen Survey sees U.S. Solidly in Independents’ Camp

Most exploration and production companies expect steadily risingU.S. oil and gas demand and continued strong prices will lead toincreased capital spending next year, according to ArthurAndersen’s 12th annual U.S. Oil & Gas Industry Outlook Survey.Survey results were released Tuesday at Andersen’s 20th annualEnergy Symposium in Houston. The survey polled executives of 89companies.

NY Senate Majority: Eliminate Gross Receipts Tax

New York state’s senate majority revealed a proposal recently toeliminate the gross receipts tax (GRT) on gas and electricity. Theproposal will be included in the senate majority’s tax reductionplan for the 2000 session, which will convene in January. JosephBruno, the senate majority leader, announced the proposal in aspeech before the New York State Economic Development Council lastweek.

Western Upticks Belie Generally Flat Pricing

The cash market continued to muddle around Monday in a generallyflat mode with a slight bias to the upside as traders tried toassess whether there was enough cold weather around to reallymatter. To Houston sources donning sweaters for possibly the firsttime this season, the answer might have seemed to be yes, but toothers it was no as they noted the abundance of available storageand the fact that only a few markets were experiencing sub-freezingtemperatures. Most points were flat to a couple of cents higher,with the declines of any size occurring at Northeast citygates(although Transco Zone 6-non NYC bucked the trend there with asmall gain). Northeast weather was rainy but not freezing.

Warm Weather Ushers January Contract to New Lows

For the second trading session in a row, natural gas futureswere hit with a wave of selling pressure Monday, as bears basked inthe glow of forecasts calling for continued above-normaltemperatures across much of the country. After showing earlypromise last week in trading up to $2.485, the January contract hassince slipped to new life-of-contract lows, closing at $2.224yesterday. Activity was with 69,325 contracts changing hands.

Coastal, Peoples Energy Pipe Targets WI Demand Growth

Growing power generation and LDC demand for gas have promptedPeoples Energy and The Coastal Corp. to team up to develop a130-mile gas pipeline from Indiana to Wisconsin. The pipe, aimed atincremental growth markets, is intended to serve electric powerplants and local utility growth markets in northern Illinois,northwestern Indiana and Wisconsin beginning in late 2001. Initialcapacity will be 1.4 Bcf/d. According to the North AmericanElectric Reliability Council, the region will need more than 8,200megawatts of additional generating capacity by 2005.

Entergy Plans 5-Year Spending Binge

Entergy Corp., a major New Orleans-based power producer andutility company, will keep its wallet open for the foreseeablefuture as it unveiled a five-year $9.8 billion capital investmentplan yesterday. The company said it will use the cash influx tofuel growth in power development and nuclear operations businesses,while also improving the performance of its utility operations.

Deregulation Still Hitting AGL Hard

The effects of deregulation are still being felt by AGLResources, the parent of the now-totally unbundled Atlanta GasLight, as 151 employees, or 7% of the workforce, has been cut sinceAugust, the company said recently. No more layoffs are expected,although the company did say it is always looking for ways toimprove efficiency.
