Enthusiasm among producers for an industry rebound has faded for 2016, particularly on the pricing side, but they appear “surprisingly” bullish about the natural gas price outlook for 2017, which may be in part because only 30 rigs or so are in operation in the gassy Marcellus Shale, analysts said Monday.

May natural gas is set to open 3 cents higher Monday morning at $1.93 as traders note a somewhat supportive weather outlook and discount any oil-related impacts. Overnight oil markets tumbled on the failure of OPEC to reach agreement on production stabilization.

Robust Storage, Weak Demand Equal Downside Room for Canadian NatGas Prices
Natural gas prices along the AECO forward curve — which already are showing signs of weakness further out the curve — could see near-month packages fall substantially in the coming weeks. Storage inventories in western Canada are nearing maximum capacity only one month into the traditional injection season, and demand is proving lackluster in high-density population centers that the region typically relies upon to take gas.
