FERC Official Seeks PUC Help in Stoking Responses to Latest Price Reporting Survey

William Hederman, chief of FERC’s Office of Market Oversight and Investigations (OMOI), on Tuesday lobbied state utility regulators to encourage power and gas companies falling under their jurisdiction to respond to a survey FERC will release this month examining if there has been progress made on the reporting of energy prices to the trade press.

New York Public Service Commission Chairman William Flynn wants the New York Mercantile Exchange to investigate the reasons for soaring natural gas futures prices in light of adequate gas storage levels and normal winter weather. Nymex suggests they need look no farther than the loss of the major gas marketers which has led to a decline in futures market liquidity.

FERC’s OMOI Chief Says Good Response to Price Reporting Survey

William Hederman, chief of FERC’s Office of Market Oversight and Investigations (OMOI), last Wednesday said the agency has received a healthy response to a recent survey on price reporting practices that was sent out to 300 natural gas and electric wholesale suppliers. The survey was designed to determine whether the companies are complying with standards FERC issued earlier this year to thwart future abuses.

Massey Calls on FERC to Extend Reach over Energy Trading Platforms

FERC Commissioner William Massey last week said that he believes the time has come for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to assert jurisdiction over energy trading platforms after FERC issued an order approving a petition filed by Pacer Power LLC, a new power trading electronic bulletin board, in which the federal agency disclaimed jurisdiction over Pacer.

Hurricane Season Expected to be More Active than Average

Renowned hurricane forecaster Dr. William Gray of Colorado State University is expecting a more active than normal hurricane season this year with an above average probability of Atlantic basin tropical cyclones and U.S. hurricane landfall. In the extended range forecast released on Friday, Gray’s team of meteorologists predicted there would be eight hurricanes, three of them intense hurricanes and a total of 12 named storms this year.
