PG&E Faces Rash of Over-Pressurized Pipes

Nearly two years into the wake of the deadly San Bruno natural gas transmission pipeline rupture and explosion, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) is still having trouble taking full control of its 50,000-mile transmission and distribution system covering the central and northern expanses of California. An internal memo from the San Francisco-based combination utility has revealed more than 120 incidents of over-pressuring on portions of its system since the Sept. 9, 2010 San Bruno tragedy.

California Power Gen Gas Rises with Nuke Plant Down

California natural gas for electricity generation rose nearly 250 MMcf/d in the past week in the wake of Southern California Edison Co. (SCE) taking its 2,300 MW San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) entirely offline. The shutdown came from a scheduled outage at Unit 2 and an unplanned outage of Unit 3 when a small leak occurred last Tuesday.

California Regulators Begin PG&E Pipe Penalty Case

California regulators Thursday began to consider whether Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) violated state or federal rules regarding pipeline classification in the wake of the San Bruno transmission pipeline rupture and explosion last year. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) opened the case at its regular business meeting in San Francisco.

BLM to Initiate Categorical Exclusions Rule

In the wake of a Wyoming court’s recent decision rejecting the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) restrictions on categorical exclusions (CX), an agency official told Congress Friday that it plans to undertake a formal rulemaking of the waiver of environmental reviews for certain onshore oil and natural gas drilling projects. House lawmakers also said they planned to petition the Department of Justice (DOJ) to appeal the court ruling.
