EIA: Japan Sets Record for LNG Consumption in Power Generation

Japan, the world’s leading importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), set a record for using LNG to generate electricity during the first five months of the year in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami, which disabled nuclear facilities in the country, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported.

California Expands Pipe Safety Regs

In the wake of the San Bruno, CA, natural gas pipeline rupture last September and another set of revelations from the utility pipeline operator, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for the second time in the past nine months has moved to beef up its staffing and oversight of the state’s natural gas transmission pipeline system. The intrastate transmission system for the most part is operated by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) and Sempra Energy utilities Southern California Gas Co. and San Diego Gas and Electric Co.

New Rules May Impact Some Texas Gas Generation

Energy infrastructure dominoes that may fall in Texas in the wake of a series of stiffer environmental rules could start with the demise of old natural gas-fired generation plants, according to a report by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) released last Wednesday. The study concluded that coal-fired generation in the state is likely to see few, if any, plant retirements from stiffer federal water, air and coal regulations.
