The vagaries of spot gas pricing were in play again as some areas with colder forecasts for Wednesday, such as the Northeast, saw quotes record sizeable declines Tuesday, while numbers in still relatively moderate areas, such as the as the western end of the South (New Orleans and Houston), moved higher.

Most Points Rally as Expected Ike Path Shifts Again

The vagaries of estimating a hurricane’s future path came into play in the spot market again Wednesday. Whereas prices fell across the board Tuesday in reaction to Hurricane Ike’s projected path shifting a bit to the south, a revision that brought the storm back slightly closer to the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) production area was sufficient to rally quotes at most points Wednesday.

Softness Likely Following Mixed Price Moves

The cash market was approximately evenly mixed in up and down movement Wednesday as weather vagaries and the previous day’s screen downturn tugged at prices in varying ways. In general the West and Midcontinent were softer, while the Gulf Coast, Midwest and Northeast were mixed but leaning mostly to the upside.
