Futures Add a Dime Despite an Impending Warm-Up

Despite the nearly nationwide warm-up expected for the Jan. 18-22 week, the February natural gas futures contract departed from Thursday’s weakness to probe the upside Friday. The prompt-month contract traded into the low $5.70s before closing the regular session at $5.691, up 10.3 cents from Thursday’s finish but 5.8 cents lower than the previous week’s close.

Bulls Show Stamina Friday as Futures Finish Higher

Proving that Thursday’s explosion to the upside was less of an aberration than many had expected, the rally in natural gas futures showed some staying power Friday as the April contract closed at $4.227, up 5.3 cents from Thursday and 29.5 cents higher than the previous week’s finish.

Falling into a rather well worn pattern, June natural gas futures Thursday expanded the upside of the recent move by a few pennies before crashing back down to earth. The prompt-month contract notched a $11.428 high in the minutes that immediately followed the natural gas storage report’s release before retreating to close at $11.263, down 6.4 cents from Wednesday.
