Futures Punch Higher on Storage Build, Crude Sympathy

A smaller than expected natural gas storage injection teamed with continued crude futures strength to spring July natural gas futures above $4 temporarily on Thursday. After recording a high of $4.067 just after 1 p.m. EDT, the prompt-month contract ended up closing the day’s regular session up 22.5 cents from Wednesday’s finish at $3.933, while July crude futures topped out north of $73/bbl before coming to rest at $72.68/bbl, up $1.35 from Wednesday.

Energy Futures Sink Along With Equities

Continued equity market uncertainty, a weather outlook that is neutral at best and comfortable natural gas storage levels teamed up on Monday to help the November natural gas futures contract to plunge below $6 for the first time since Sept. 24, 2007. The prompt-month contract on Monday traded mostly between $6.050 and $6.200 in the regular session before closing at $6.121, down 11.8 cents from Friday’s finish.

Futures Sink a Nickel After Touching $12/MMBtu

Coming off the holiday weekend, some not-often-seen weakness in crude futures and natural gas futures price resistance at $12 teamed to push June natural gas lower on Tuesday, one day ahead of the contract’s expiration. The prompt-month contract recorded a high of $12.034 just after noon EDT, which triggered a round of selling that left June to finish the day’s regular session at $11.801, down 5.6 cents from Friday’s close.
